World Arts Woodwind Institute 2015

About the Program

The World Arts Woodwind Institute offered Santa Fe middle school students an exploration of global music and supporting arts traditions with applications for woodwind performance. Students participated in a global survey of arts and culture, weekly woodwind lessons, weekly percussion lessons, and performance preparation. The program included a culinary workshop and culminated in a final public performance.

Program Schedule

WEEK 1: JUNE 2 - GLOBAL ARTS INTRODUCTION  1pm - 4pm, Warehouse 21

  • Introduction to Music of the World / Introduction to West African Percussion / Introduction to Solfege / Instrument Checkup

WEEK 2: JUNE 9 - HIMALAYAS  1pm - 4pm, Warehouse 21

  • Introduction to Music and Theatre of the Himalayas / Large Ensemble Rehearsal / West African Percussion Rehearsal / Ramayana Stories and Character Face Painting

WEEK 3: JUNE 16 - CULINARY WORKSHOP  10am - 6pm, Camino Lejo Site

  • 5:30pm: MINI FACULTY PERFORMANCE and PRESENTATION OF TAPAS

  • Walking Field Trip to the Museum of International Folk Art / Small Ensemble Rehearsals / Tibetan Mandalas and Sand Painting

WEEK 4: JUNE 23 - BRAZIL  1pm - 4pm, Warehouse 21

Introduction to Brazilian Choro Music / Ensemble and Percussion Rehearsals

WEEK 5: JUNE 30 - NEW ORLEANS  1pm - 4pm, Warehouse 21

  • Introduction to Dixieland Jazz / Ensemble and Percussion Rehearsals

WEEK 6: JULY 7 - JEWISH DIASPORA  1pm - 4pm, Warehouse 21

  • Introduction to Klezmer and Sephardic Music / Ensemble and Percussion Rehearsals

WEEK 8: JULY 14 - CHINA  1pm - 4pm, Warehouse 21

  • Introduction to Chinese Instrumental Music and Chinese Opera / Guqin Composition Project / Ensemble and Percussion Rehearsals

WEEK 9: JULY 21 - JAPAN  1pm - 4pm, Warehouse 21

  • Introduction to Noh Theatre / Noh Mask Making and Composition Project / Ensemble and Percussion Rehearsals

WEEK 10: JULY 28 - BALKANS  1pm - 4pm, Warehouse 21

  • Introduction to Music and Dance from the Balkans / Balkan Song and Dance Workshop / Ensemble, Vocal, and Percussion Rehearsals

WEEK 11: AUGUST 4 - CULTURES OF THE SOUTHWEST  1pm - 4pm, Warehouse 21
